(3/9/2007) Full ResultsAt the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships, Senior Captain Fred Jones was the lone Jumbo representative. Fred entered the meet with fourth best performance in the Long Jump. That mark came at the MIT invitational when he jumped 7.22/23'08.5". Fred also came in with the ninth best Triple Jump mark, which he recorded at the All-New England Championships where he jumped 14.42m. Fred's impressive overall season earned him the New England Field Athlete of the Year honor for the second time in his career.
In the long jump, Fred opened up the day with a solid jump of 7.08m. While not his best performance, it gave him the confidence he needed for the rest of the event. On his second attempt, Fred recorded a leap of 23'11.75" (7.31m) to break his own school record. With that jump Jones placed himself first by over five inches going into finals. During the 5th round, Jared Randle of Lincoln University matched Fred\'s best jump and technically took over first place as he had a better second jump. Fred responded with a 7.18m mark to take the lead back. In the final round, the defending indoor champion, Greg Tyson of Heidelberg College, jumped 7.39m/24'03". Fred composed himself for a final attempt but unfortunately fouled what appeared to be a big jump and earned the runner up spot.
On Saturday, Fred returned to the runway for the Triple Jump. After a shaky start, Jones got off a good jump of 14.49m to earn himself the fourth spot going into the finals. During the 5th round, Fred took the lead with a school record jump of 14.84m/48'08.25". His lead lasted only a few minutes, as Kamar James of Fisk University edged Fred out with a 14.88m leap.
The 16 points that Fred scored by virtue of his two second place finishes put Tufts in a tie for seventh place--the highest of all New England schools. Also, Fred earned his eighth and ninth All-America awards this weekends. With those he now surpasses James Lavallee '96 who accumulated eight All-America honors during his tenure on the hill.
