Tufts Tallies Another Win at Tufts Invite 2

Tufts won its second home meet decisively with 199 points, far ahead of second place Bates' 121 points. As usual, Tufts dominated in the jumps and hurdles. However, the young sprint squad performed well, picking up some of the slack left by sub par performances in the distance events.

This young sprint squad was lead by junior Trevor Williams with a victory in the 400m (50.84) and sopohomore Mickey Ferri with his victory in the 200m (23.69) and fifth place in the 55m (6.79). Mickey?s time in the 55m was a personal best, as well one of the fastest times from a Tufts runner in the past few years. Other young talents in the 400m include Nathan Scott, Andrew Gordetsky, and Dustin Virgilio, who finished 3rd through 5th with Scott coming in under 53 seconds.

Middle distance stars Patrick Mahoney and Aaron Kaye finished 2nd and 3rd in the 800m combining for 14 points. Mahoney finished strongly in 1:57.88, while Kaye fell back slightly in the final 100m to finish in 1:59.52. Look for these two athletes to be a factor in any race between 800m and 1500m in the upcoming weeks.

The 1 mile run was contested for the first time this season in the Gantcher Center, and was won by Matt Fortin in 4:20.15. Nate Brigham closed quickly in 4:22.81. Considering Nate's training, this time bodes very well for a fast 5000m in the upcoming weeks.

As mentioned previously, the distance crew had an unusually sub par day as they were shut out of the top 3 spots in the 3000m and 5000m. The absence of Nate Brigham and Matt Lacey may have attributed to this, but the athletes in these events could have performed better. Mike Don had the best race of the group by finishing 4th in the 3000m with a time of 8:49.55.

As usual, Ludd and Thompson, who finished 1st and 3rd respectively, dominated the 55 hurdles. Ludd?s victory came in a time of 7.99 seconds, breaking the 8 second barrier for the first time in his career.

Fred Jones was again the top points scorer of the meet. He will almost certainly be a factor at the NCAA Championships in March. His teammates Nate Thompson (3rd), Nathan Scott (3rd), and Kenneth Kang (4th) backed up Jones in the long and triple jumps for another dominate performance. Jeremy Arek continued Tufts' strong showing in the field events with a high jump of 6?4?, which was good enough for 3rd place.

The throwers competed against a very strong Bates team and Ryan Byrne and Jason Galvin had to settle with 3rd and 4th places in the shot put. Brandon Udelhofen managed a huge personal best in the weight throw (14.09m) to displace some of the Bates competitors and finish 4th.

Another notable performer was freshman Dave Bach, who ran extremely well in the 1600m leg of the DMR. While he came up just short against the Stonehill leg, he bested his mile performance only a few hours before.
Next week Tufts travels to Bowdoin to compete in a bragging rights meet against Bowdoin and MIT.
