Two Qualify at Tufts Last Chance Decathlon
(4/23/2008) Full ResultsTufts University hosted a Last Chance Decathlon on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, giving six athletes the chance to hit qualifying marks for the decathlon before championship season kicks off this weekend.
Senior Derek Engelking was the top Jumbo, finishing in second with 5792 points--only 208 points from an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The highlight of the event for Engelking was the 110m hurdles, which he ran in a time of 16.22, good for 708 points.
Senior captain Nate Scott scored 5524 points after only competing in nine events. His day 1 total was a very impressive 3373 points, and included a 100m time of 11.55 (742 points), 6.37m long jump (668 points), and 52.22 seconds in the 400m (715 points).
Sophomores Bobby Bardin and Peter Browne made their decathlon debut, finishing with 3817 and 3765 points, respectively. The two impressed many of their teammates with these scores, considering they learned how to complete some events in the 30-minute breaks.
Both Engelking and Scott qualified for the ECAC Championships, which will be held in mid-May.
