(2/12/2005) See more Photos Full ResultsOn an exciting night for Tufts Track and Field, the Distance Medley Relay team of Aaron Kaye, Trevor Williams, Patrick Mahoney, and Matt Fortin ran 10:01.33 to smash the school record set two weeks ago on the same track. Aaron Kaye ran a superb lead off leg, replacing Brian McNamara, who was recovering from an illness. Kaye split 3:03 to set the table perfectly for the rest of the relay. Trevor Williams snuck under 50 second for the 400, at which point the 15 supporting athletes at the meet knew they were in for something special. Patrick Mahoney ran valiantly in the 800, and split 1:55.0 to hold off Bowdoin's 800 leg. Anchor Matt Fortin had an oppoortunity to cap of the relay with a flourish, and he did just that. Running just behind Bowdoin's All American Andrew Combs, Fortin sped to a 4:12.6 split, and stopped the clock at 10:01.33. This time is a mere .33 second away from being an automatic qualifier, and will almost certainly place the Jumbo relay team in the NCAA Championships in March.
In the 5000, senior Nate Brigham and junior Matt Lacey ran excellent races, and both were able to produce provision qualifying time for NCAAs. Running with the pack through 3000m in 8:46, Lacey and Brigham had their sights set on the automatic qualifying time of 14:30.5. This was not to be, however, as the pack slowed in the 4th kilometer. Brigham used his excellent closing speed to finish in 14:36.59, and Lacey crossed the line in about 14:43.43. This is an improvement on his 14:48 from before winter break. Both athletes will look to improve on these times later in the season.
