Kaye Sets School Record at Open New Englands
(2/25/2005) Full ResultsSenior captain Aaron Kaye ran to a blazing 2:28.93 in the 1000 meter run this evening at the Open New England Championships hosted by Boston University. His time broke the record of 2:29.32 set in 1982 by Paul Murray. Kaye ran very comfortably through the early stages of the race and then went to the lead as the pace slowed a bit. In the fifth and final lap, he closed quickly on the heat winners, crossing the line just slightly behind the Division I competition.
Other strong finishers this evening included Fred Jones in the Long Jump, finishing in second place with a jump of 7.06 meters - his second best career jump. Patrick Mahoney broke the 1:55 barrier in the 800 meters for the first time in his career. He ran a 1:54.49, which is a provisional NCAA qualifying mark, and the second fastest time in Tufts history. Ciaran O'Donovan shattered his personal best time in the 1000 meters, running less than three seconds off Kaye's record setting performance, finishing in 2:31.55. O'Donovan's time would have won the Division III New England Championships last weekend. Matt Lacey ran a personal best 14:42.83 in the 5000 meters, which will hopefully be enough to get him to the NCAA Championships in Illinois. Matt Fortin also turned in a solid performance in the mile, running 4:16.83, which shatters his personal record in the event. Brian McNamara also set a personal best in the mile at 4:18.99. The Distance Medley Relay also ran exceptionally well out of the slower section. Nate Cleveland led off with a very respectable 3:09, handing off to first year Andrew Gordetsky who ran a 53 second quarter. Dan Sullivan ran the 800 leg in 1:58 and handed off to anchor Ayenda Inyagwa at exactly 6:00. He closed out in 4:30, to give the team a total time of 10:30.75.
Tommorrow, expect strong competition from Kaye in the 1000 meter finals, Jones who is the top seed in the Triple Jump, Jeremy Arak in the High Jump, Jamil Ludd in the 55 meter hurdle semifinals, Mike Don in the 3000, and fresh 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 meter relays.
Saturday?s Competition- Jones second in Triple, Kaye 7th in 1000
After breaking the school 1000-meter record Friday in perhaps the gutsiest race of Senior Aaron Kaye?s career, Kaye was back in competition Saturday looking to score some points for the Jumbo?s in the 1000-meter final. Kaye was gapped early by the lead pack and could never make up the ground, but he held on strong for 7th place in a time of 2:30.10.
Sophomore Fred Jones also scored for the Jumbos placing 2nd in the Triple Jump with a leap of 14.10 meters. Jones placed 2nd in the Long Jump Friday night with a leap of 7.06 meters.
Jeremy Arak placed 11th in the high jump (1.86m) and Jamil Ludd missed qualifying for the finals of the 55-meter hurdles (8.11 seconds).
In the 3k, Senior Mike Don ran smoothly through 1600 meters in 4:33, then locked up and lost his vision in the last 4 laps. He finished in a disappointing 8:42.77, a second off his career best.
Both the 4*800 meter and 4*400 meter relays had strong performances. The 4*800 meter relay composed of Matt Fortin, Daniel Sullivan, Ciaran O?Donovan, and Brian McNamara ran a solid 7:53.89, despite everyone on the squad doubling. The 4*400 meter relay composed of Nathan Cleveland Patrick Mahoney, Nathan Scott, and Trevor Williams ran a season best of 3:20.57.
