Freshmen Lead Small Jumbo Team at Conn College
(10/21/2014 6:59 PM) Full ResultsThe Jumbos sent a small squad of 6 runner to the Connecticut College Invitational this past weekend, while their top 12 runners rested for the upcoming NESCAC Championships. Tufts fought hard to a 13th place finish on a warm and windy day in CT, defeating several of their opponent’s varsity teams.
Senior Joe Poupard lead his teammates through the early stages of the race with an aggressive first mile. He was soon joined by freshmen Sam Little and John Greenberg, who have worked well together in every race this year. Little has shown great progress in adjusting to the 8k distance, moved up well through the middle part of the race, and was the first Tufts runner across the line in a time of 27:05. The experience he has gained in the chaos of some larger college races will certainly serve him well in the upcoming ECAC championships and in the years to come.
Greenberg lead the next pack of Tufts finishers, with a great kick over the slightly uphill finish. While he struggled in the middle of the race, he will also have another chance to bounce back at ECACs. He was followed closely by
Sophomore Michael Caughron, who responded well to his first appearance in the team’s top 5 and had the strongest performance of his season. The Jumbos scoring 5 were rounded out by Junior middle distance runner Alex Apostolides, who had the closest time differential to his race last week, and Joe Poupard. Sophomore Chris Warren had a challenging day, but will look to build his strength back up for track alongside Apostolides, Caughron, and Poupard.
Tufts will take the weekend off from Cross Country racing next weekend, while the Mid-Distance team hits the roads for a 5k in Arlington, MA. The postseason officially begins on November 1st at Middlebury College, where many of New England’s best teams will gather for the NESCAC Championships.
