Jumbos Win Home Snowflake Invite
(4/3/2015 11:04 PM) Full ResultsThis past Saturday, the Jumbos braved the frigid conditions and competed in the Tufts Snowflake Classic. Considering that this was the first and only home meet of the season, the squad was eager to post some nice marks even considering the weather.
Due to the snow and the freezing temperatures, the jumpers competed indoors at the Gantcher facility. The throwers and the track athletes were not so lucky, as their events were held outside at the Dussault track. True to its name, snow fell steadily throughout the day for the entirety of our Snowflake Classic.
The meet began with the 10,000m. The highlight of the event came from the performance of senior Colin McCrory who won the race in a time of 31:58.44. Though McCrory ran exceptionally well, the rest of the Jumbos who competed in the 10k also posted some fantastic times. Sophomores Tim Nichols and Michael Coughron, junior Michael Curley, and seniors Nick Guarnaccia, Greg Hardy, and McCrory, all qualified for the Division III New England Outdoor Championships with their 10k performances.
Another highlight from the distance squad came from sophomore Bobby McLaughlin in the 5000m. McLaughlin ran a huge PR in the event, clocking in with a time of 15:49.59.
The jumpers also posted some nice marks. Most notably, freshman Stefan Duviver scored in a plethora of events for the Jumbos. Duviver took fourth in the long jump (42’7") and fifth in the high jump (6’2â€). Junior Bryson Hoover-Hankerson leaped 20'9 1/4" in the long jump for sixth place respectively.
The performances by the throwers were very promising as well. Senior co-captain Brian Williamson was the highlight of the thrower crew, as he scored in three events. Williamson placed second in the discus (127'9"), third in the shot put (47'2 1/2), and fourth in the hammer (157’0â€).
Next weekend, the Jumbos will travel to Amherst College to compete in the Amherst College Invitational. The squad looks forward to improving their marks as some more favorable weather is in the forecast. As NESCAC season approaches, the team is getting very excited for what lies ahead. #LETSGOJUMBOS
