Another School Record Falls
(5/14/2005) Full ResultsMatt Lacey continues his streak of PR's with a national qualifying 30:04 in the 10,000. Along with two other Jumbos, Matt traveled to Princeton University for the IC4A Championship meet. The meet is similar to the ECAC meet, in the sense that it draws schools from up and down the east coast, but features mostly Division I schools. Matt's performance earned him the school record, coming in just his second race at the 10K distance. The race featured great conditions and a full field of some of the top Division I, II, and III competition in the east. Matt went out conservatively, going through the mile around 4:55 in about 25th place. He ran in the second chase pack and came through the 5K around 15:07. He literally led this pack up to the first chase pack and later led the charge for the leaders. Through the last 1000 meters he and the eventual runner-up from William & Mary surged towards the finish. Matt finished third overall, with his time automatically qualifying him for the NCAA national championship.
Also competing at the meet were Nate Brigham and Fred Jones. Nate's time of 14:35 in the 5K does not improve his standing on the national lists. However, Nate considers it a good race, given the fact that he didn't feel great, but still posted a solid performance.
Fred Jones competed in both the long jump and triple jump. Fred's jump of 7.13 meters (23-04.75) in the long jump flights earned him a eighth place finish, despite the fact that a minor injury kept him from jumping in the finals. Fred was able to return the next day to compete in the triple jump, where he posted a season's best 14.37. The Jumbos ended the meet as one of only five Division III teams to score, finishing behind Lincoln University but ahead of MIT, The College of New Jersey, and Montclair St.
