(4/15/2006) See more Photos Full ResultsFor the first time this season the Jumbos found good weather at UMass Lowell, and took advantage of it to post a number of PR's and qualification times.
Leading the day off Tim Bassell continued his amazing season by posting yet another PR. With a vault of 13'11.25", he took second place to Kyle Wilson from Fitchburg State. With that performance, Tim is now ranked second in the NESCAC. Sophomore Kenneth Kang had a great day in the vault as well. Kenny set a season's best by 18 inches with a 12 foot clearance.
The Sprinters flexed their muscles with Fred Jones, Phil Rotella, and Mickey Ferri taking fourth, fifth, and sixth places in the 100m dash with times of 11.70, 11.72, and 11.73 respectively. In the 200m dash Trevor Williams and freshman standout Colin Fitzgerald took fourth and fifth respectively with times of 23.49 and 23.54. Trevor also ran to a season's best in the 400 with a time of 50.55. The 400 relay squad of Fred Jones, Phil Rotella, Colin Fitzgerald and Marvin Walker had difficulties but ran to a solid time of 43.83. Dustin Virgilio, Trevor Williams, Nate Cleveland and Pat Mahoney all ran well in the 1600 relay. The foursome finished second in 3:23.77.
Senior Pat Mahoney placed fourth behind of a trio of Williams College runners in a very tight 800 meter race. Captain Matt Lacey dropped down in distance for a speed workout for this meet. He placed third in the 1500 with an excellent time of 3:58.21. Many of the distance runners decided to forego their usual events so they could compete in the rarely contested Two Mile Run. Sophomore Chris Kantos won the race in a respectable 9:27.41. Josh Kennedy followed him up with a fourth place finish (9:34.57). The only other Jumbo victory for the day came in the 3000 meter Steeplechase. Dave Sorensen beat out all the other competitors by 12 seconds even after taking a nasty spill on the final homestretch.
Jeremy Arak and Fred Jones led the effort for the Tufts Jumpers. Arak finished in a tie for second as he cleared 6'04". On the horizontal runway, Fred Jones also earned a second place finish with an NCAA provisional mark of 23'03".
The Throwers did more than hold their own at Lowell. Senior Brandon Udelhofen placed second overall in the Discus throw. Brandon has not even begun to hit top form, so expect big things from him in the upcoming weeks. Tufts also had good representation in the Javelin. Sophomores Derek Engleking and Nick Gentili finished second and third respectively.
The Jumbos will head up to Dartmouth next weekend for their final tune up before championship season gets underway.
