As classes around Tufts continue to finish up and call it a semester, the Jumbo Multis just started getting their season started. This weekends pentathlon at Bates College marked the start of the season for five Jumbos as they fought for PRs and points in the 5-event competition. In the end, Tufts came away from the meet with six overall qualifiers for the New England Championships.

Decathlon All American, Jared Engelking led the way for the Jumbos with his score of 3316 points. He opened up with a new school record in the 60mH running 8.50 just edging out Trevor Donadt by 0.06 seconds. Granted, this was the first meet that any Jumbo has ever run the 60mH, it was a given that someone was going to come away with a new school record. Engelking and Donadt have each qualified for the National Championships in the 110H and 400IH, respectively. They look to build off these early season New England Qualifiers next month as competition continues.

Donadt and, freshmen, Mike Blair were the two other New England Qualifiers in the pentathlon. Donadts 3152 points and Blairs 2937 points have them currently ranked 3rd and 6th in the region. Blair added his own New England Qualifier with his win in the HJ clearing 1.89m and narrowly missing 1.92m.

Rounding out the Jumbo competitors were senior Bobby Bardin and sophomore Tobias Reeuwijk. For Reeuwijk, it was his first time competing in four out of the five events. For all of the pentathletes, it is quite easy to find areas for improvement. Having spent the weekend kicking off all the rust from a long off season, its safe to say that this years multi crew will easily meet the standard of excitement that Tufts Multis have grown accustomed to.
