Jumbos Earn 3 Victories at DIII New England Meet
(2/25/2015 3:38 PM) Full ResultsThis past weekend, the Jumbos competed in the Division III New England Championships held at Springfield College. The team posted some promising times as they competed in their first championship meet of the season.
The meet started off with Allan Yau and Alex Karys competing on Friday in the heptathlon. Over the two-day seven-event marathon, Yau notched numerous PRs or season bests to put together one of the strongest performances of the meet, finishing in 4th place with 4,236 points.
Junior Mitchell Black won the 1000m in 2:28.24, which broke the school record of 2:28.70 set by Billy Hale in 2010. Junior Veer Bhalla also came out victorious winning the 600m in 1:21.60. The 4x800 relay team of Black, Bhalla, and freshmen Tom DePalma and Peter McCawley won their event as well. The 4x800 relay victory was one of the most exciting races of the day as the squad trailed for most of the race and it was not until the last lap that Black unleashed his famous kick to help the relay emerge victorious.
Another outstanding race was in the 5000m as junior Michael Curley placed second. Curley ran the gutsiest race of the day, never settling but rather pushing the pace aggressively in order to help score for the Jumbos. Curley’s time of 14:52 was a season-best time and big PR, and for him to be in 2nd among a mix of All-Americans and athletes with much faster 5K PRs was quite an achievement.
Sophomore pole vaulter Pietro Possenti also had a fantastic day. His clearance of 13'9 ¼" earned him a PR and a fourth place finish, significantly higher than his 13th place seed mark coming in.
Atticus Swett also added to his All-New England mantle (also scoring last year) in the throws to take fifth in the shot put (47’9â€).
Ultimately, the Jumbos placed sixth overall with 52.5 points. While not the team’s best performance as a collective unit, the squad is eager to shift the momentum and start cranking out better makrs through the rest of the indoor season and as the team transitions into outdoor. Up next for the team is the All-New England Championships held at Boston University! #GoJumbos
