Political Science
As a captain, All-American, and school record holder, Billy Hale was one of the leaders of the Tufts Mens Track & Field program almost from day one. With few upperclassmen middle distance returners during Hale's freshman year, he and his classmates were asked to step up and compete in conference and regional championships early in their careers, and quickly gained valuable experience. As somewhat of a seasoned veteran by just his sophomore year, Billy took the helm of what has now become a deep and impressive middle distance group; last year's demolition of the 4x800m School Record is a testament in part to Hale's leadership. A role model by example, his PRs of 1:53.49, 2:28.70, and 3:58.93 litter the Tufts Top 10 lists and showcase his range. For those that remember the races his school records in the 1000m, 4x800m, and DMR were set, these times also testify to Hale's punishing unwillingness to let go when it got tough, a rare quality that led to success as often as it did a post-race trip to the garbage can. Indeed, the image of Billy's slumped-over figure, head buried in the trash, vomiting, embodies quite well the legacy he leaves behind of giving everything he had to the program and to his teammates.
