Matt Tirrell • 2010
Burlington, MA (BHS)
Clinical Psych
2010 saw the return of many Jumbos who had spent weeks, seasons, entire years--even the majority of their collegiate career--battling injury and returning triumphantly to the sport. What's more, they set PRs again and again, bringing to fruition the hours of rehab and mental battles against quitting that had brought them back to the good health. Though this describes a common theme throughout all of TUTF, it traces the senior year of Matt Tirrell in particular. After several unfulfilling seasons, Tirrell determined to have the best senior year possible--and accomplished that goal beyond anyone's expectations. The focus he brought to practice was palpable, and it paid off in the form of new PRs and an NCAA automatic qualifier in the DMR, thanks in large part to Matt's brilliant lead-off 1200m leg. His name now appears at third all-time on the Tufts Top 10 list for the 1000m at 2:29.90, and as a member of the school record-holding DMR at 9:56.97. Completely his senior year in fine fashion, Tirrell lowered his 1500m PR to a solid 4:03.78.
