2010 Cross Country Season Preview
(8/1/2010 8:31 PM)It goes without saying that the class of 2010 was an incredibly dedicated, devoted, and decorated group of athletes, teammates, and friends. Their absence in the 2010 campaign will be largely felt. The list is both long and respected. Nick Welch, Jesse Faller, Ryan Lena, Billy Hale, Jason Hanrahan, Alex Landy, Scott Brinkman, Josh Gordon, and Matt Tirrell round out the lengthy list of graduating seniors. Nine All American honors, 12 school records, countless Top 10 spots, NESCAC scorers, and All-Region finishes. With such a void, it’s amazing to say that the Tufts XC squad has the potential to be stronger and deeper this coming fall.
The team returns three All New England finishers from last year’s National Qualifier in the form of Kyle Marks (23rd), Jeff Ragazzini (29th), and Chris Brunnquell (35th). This trio is backed by a talented and deep set of returning athletes. Matt Rand (18th at the 2009 NESCAC Championships) came into his own with his 14:52 5k and 31:31 10k during the track seasons. Scott McArthur continued his strong growth as he dropped his 3k time to 8:48 and his 5k mark to 15:13. Additionally, Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot, Andrew Bellet, Connor Rose, Dan Kirschner, Jeff Marvel, Sam Haney, Luke Maher, and Brandon Severson all return after contributing at a championship level for the Jumbos in the past.
As for the incoming freshmen class of 2014, their adjustment to the collegiate 8k remains the biggest question. The opportunity exists for some contribution from the rookie class, but the onus of carrying the squad will always rest on the shoulders of the veterans. Look for these freshmen to provide some great energy and depth to the team this fall; their potential, versatility, and championship experience give them a great jumping off point.
Needless to say, the 2010 season for TUXC has the chance to be one of the most exciting in recent years. The New England region remains one of the most competitive in the nation and the NESCAC Conference is still the one to which all others are measured. With such intense and deep competition, these TUXC harriers will find themselves amidst many great battles.
TUXC – Complacency has no home here.
