Meet The Coaches
The coaches of the Tufts Track & Field and Cross Country strive to give their athletes every tool that they need to become champions. This includes workouts, nutrition, strength training and conditioning. The onus is on the athlete to put in the hard work to achieve their best. The following is a very brief overview of the individuals who work with Tufts Track & Field and Cross Country. The coaches can be reached at the track office, (617) 627-5062.
Ethan Barron ~ Head Coach
~ Ethan came to Tufts in 2002 as an assistant to coach Connie Putnam. Before coming to The Hill, Ethan was a standout at Middlebury College, where he competed in the 55m high hurdles, 110m high hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400m, long jump, and triple jump. He holds school records in the 55m and 110m hurdles, and was All American in each. Ethan holds degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry from Middlebury, as well as an M.A. in Educational Studies from Tufts. In 2005, Ethan took over the helm of the Men's Cross Country/Track and Field team here at Tufts. In his first year as a head coach, the Jumbos finished 5th in the nation for the cross country season. Tufts would go on to set a school record for points scored at the New England Indoor Championships and national qualifiers. As a result, Ethan was voted NESCAC Coach of the Year for both cross country and outdoor track. His first year was capped off as Fred Jones claimed the national title in the Triple Jump with a school record leap of 49-7. Now in his 2nd year, the program placed a school record 7th place at the NCAA Championships while he was voted New England Regional Coach of the Year. When asked about his effectiveness as a head coach, Ethan can be repeatedly heard saying "I am only as strong as those that surround me, but with these assistants I feel invincible." Ethan is a native of Rutland, VT and now resides in Medford. You can email Ethan at

Rod Hemingway ~ Assistant Coach ~ Distance
~ Rod, a '97 Tufts graduate and two-time cross country All American, enters his 10th year of coaching and his 4th year at Tufts University. Following his undergraduate work, Rod went on to receive his Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy at Tufts. His extensive knowledge of training theory and running mechanics is only overshadowed by his championship race experience and adaptive training methods. Rod has been an invaluable part of the Jumbos' success. His work with the Tufts distance squad earned the Tufts Cross Country coaches the NESCAC Co-coach of the Year Award for the 2005 season.
Ed Arcaro ~ Assistant Coach ~ Throws
~ A local boy, born and raised in Medford, MA, Ed Arcaro is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While a student at UMass Amherst, Ed set school records for the 35# weight, Shot Put, Hammer Throw, and Discus. After graduating college Coach Arcaro continued to compete throwing at 13 consecutive National Championships and three Olympic trials. Since, Ed has been coaching at the high school, collegiate, and elite levels for the past 14 years. He brings a wealth of knowledge and love of the throws to practice everyday. Currently, Ed works locally for the IRS and lives with his wife and two sons in Burlington, MA
Kevin Bright ~ Graduate Assistant ~ Sprints/Intermediate Hurdles/Middle Distance
~ Kevin is an '06 graduate of Middlebury College where he was a member of the Middlebury Football, Indoor, and Outdoor Track teams. His primary event on the track was the 400m Intermediate Hurdles in which he earned All American honors three times. Kevin set his PR in the Intermediate Hurdles this spring at the NCAA championships when he finished as national runner-up in a time of 51.95. In addition to the hurdles, Kevin also competed in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 4x400m, and Long Jump. Kevin is a former Regional Athlete of the Year and graduated from Middlebury with a double major in Environmental Studies and Geology. Molly Dickens ~ Assistant Coach ~ Pole Vault
~ Molly returns as the pole vault coach for Tufts Track & Field. A graduate of Cornell University, Molly vaulted for the Big Red for four years. Before coming to Tufts, Molly coached at her high school in Florida where she led her vaulters to grab two of the top three at the state meet, including the champion, who posted a state record vault of 15'9". Last year, all five of the Tufts pole vaulters recorded personal records, highlighted by Tim Bassell's three foot improvement. Molly is currently pursuing her PhD in Biology here at Tufts.
Adam Carberry ~ Volunteer Assistant Coach
~ A graduate of Alfred University where he competed in the middle distances events, Adam works with the Tufts coaching staff in a number of functions. He is a valuable addition to the team at practice time, increasing the amount of individualized attention that each athlete receives. Adam also aids the coaching staff with a number of office duties that don't necessarily show up in the stat sheets. He has been an assistant with the team for several years and works with the middle distance runners as well as the multi-event athletes. Adam recently received his Masters in Chemistry and is pursuing a PhD in Science Education at Tufts. He currently works with Tufts Lego Engineering Project that works to develop engineering skills at younger ages.
Scott Benowicz ~ Volunteer Assistant Coach ~ Javelin
~ Scott Benowicz is a recent addition to the Tufts coaching staff. A high school long jumper turned javelin thrower, Scott graduated from Cornell University in 2003. While at Cornell, he competed as a member of both the varsity soccer and track & field teams. As a captain in his senior year, he qualified for the national championships with a school record toss of 232-6 (70.88m) leading his team to the Ivy League Championships. Now, as a member of the Jumbo coaching staff, Scott works with a talented core of javelin and multi-event athletes that boasts some of the best returning marks in the conference. He is currently employed at New Balance living in Medford, MA.
Patricia Cordeiro ~ Athletic Trainer
~ Pat and the rest of the training room staff provide invaluable support to the Jumbos through injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation. Pat, the primary trainer to the Men's XC/Track teams, truly is a precious resource to the athletes and coaching staff. Being a competitive triathlete herself, Pat has an indepth understanding of the mindset and physical demands of a runner and, therefore, the injuries that harass them. XC/Track & Field injuries are unlike those from any other sport and require a certain personality/skill set to manage them properly. The Tufts coaching staff has yet to meet an athletic trainer with more track specific knowledge, patience, and versatility than Pat Cordeiro. Her involvement with the programs continually gives Tufts a decided advantage over their competition.
Mike Pimentel ~ Strength & Conditioning Coordinator
~ Mike and his staff work with the Tufts Cross Country/Track and Field program in the areas of strength training, flexibility, injury prevention, and biomechanics. Mike's knowledge of the biomechanics and kinesiology of different Track & Field events works in conjunction with his assessment skills to help the Tufts programs prevent and rehabilitate from injuries. A well structured, periodized strength program is critical to reaching one's potential as a collegiate athlete. Working in association with the rest of the coaching staff, Mike ensures that the team's weight, plyometric, and rehab progressions flow seamlessly with the rest of the training.
