Senior Joe Brown Hammers Out NCAA-Qualifying Throw
(5/2/2008) Full ResultsOn Friday night at the US Coast Guard Academy, senior Joe Brown threw the hammer an NCAA provisionally-qualifying distance of 52.42m (172-0). Following the leadership of their senior, a trio of freshmen 10k runners put together three of their own PRs. Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot, Chris Brunnquell, and classmate Andrew Bellett came across the line 32:25.29, 32:34.30, and 33:23.10, respectively. Both Eisenberg-Guyot and Brunnquell were able to knock of more than a minute from their race the week before.
The team returned the next morning with plans of building upon the success of the Friday four. They would be greeted less than ideal weather conditions as the scattered showers, wind, and chill would only grant success to the most focused athlete. Starting off the day would be the Jumbo sprinters in the 100m/110H trials. Senior Marcus Boggis led the way for the Jumbos in the 100m equaling his time from the previous weeks NESCAC Championships. With the diminished weather conditions, this weekend's race was a great step in the right direction for the senior. Two hurdlers would earn trips to the finals as sophomores Trevor Donadt and Ikenna Acholonu would come back to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively in the finals.
Donadt would build on his 2nd place finish in the 110H with another impressive performance in the 400IH. He continued to show his dominance in the region as he built on his conference title adding a regional title as well. His 54.36 was another provisional qualifier for the national championships as he outpaced the competition by more than a second. Classmate Scott Brinkman put together his own PR race in the 800m as well. In only his 4th 800m of his life, having just moved up from the 400m, Brinkman clocked in at 1:56.65 with seemingly plenty more in the tank.
Rounding up the competition for Jumbos was a trio of jumpers. James Bradley and Jeremy Arak would take 1st and 2nd in the chilly high jump both being the only athletes to clear 6-5. After a few great solid attempts at the national qualifying 6-8, Bradley would take home the title on misses. Freshmen Sam Read continued his trend of stepping up at championship meets adding another 6" onto his season best performance. Extending his season by an addition 2 weeks by qualifying for the ECAC Championships, it is easy to see higher heights in Read's near future.
All in all, the Jumbos left 16 athletes from their indoor championship team back at campus for finals. The 5th place finish at the New England Championships was a great day for the team having only 8 athletes in the scoring ranks. With final exams a thing of the past, another week of resting, and some great competition, the upcoming Open New England Championships should be a great place for some impressive PRs.
