(5/10/2013 8:56 AM) Full ResultsAfter winning the NESCAC title a week prior, a partial Jumbos squad ventured to Colby College in Maine to compete in the D3 New England Championships. Despite resting some of the squad's top distance athletes, the Jumbos finished third behind Bates and MIT, propelled by depth throughout all event groups.
Freshman Mitchell Black notched the lone victory of the day for the Jumbos, leading wire-to-wire in the 800 to finish in a season-best 1:52.21. Despite a fast start, Mitchell was able to hold off a late charge on the homestretch; just two-tenths separated the top four finishers in the race. Mitchell's time ranks him 11th nationally.
Junior Ben Wallis also threw down a national-caliber performance, running a personal-best time of 9:06.49 in the steeplechase to finish second. Wallis's time places him seventh on the national list.
The Jumbos were also backed by strong performance in the sprints, where Senior Vinnie Lee and junior Graham Beutler continued their stellar seasons. Beutler clocked a time of 21.91 in the 200 to place second while Lee took sixth in the 100 with a time of 11.24. Later in the day, Lee and Beutler teamed up with junior Dan Lange Vagle and freshman Bryson Hoover Hankerson to break the school record in the 4x100 meter relay in 42.15, placing second.
The Jumbos jumpers and throwers were also productive. In the jumps, senior Gbola Ajayi placed third in the triple jump 46'8 ¼" (14.23m) and seventh in the long jump 21'2 ½" (6.46m). In the throws, meanwhile, sophomore Brian Williamson heaved a school-record and personal-best throw of 52'4 ¾" (15.97m) in the shot put to place third. Williamson also placed fifth in the hammer with his toss of 173'5" (52.86m). Senior tri-captain Curtis Yancy (took sixth in the discus with a mark of 151'9" (46.26m), while junior Matt Johnson threw the javelin a personal-best distance of 187'3" (57.07m).
The squad will look to notch more personal-bests as championship season rolls on. Next weekend, the Jumbos will compete in the Open New England Championships at Stonehill College and the IC4A Championship at Princeton.
