Jumbos Fifth in Hard-Fought Regional
(11/10/2012 8:33 PM) Full ResultsThe Jumbos competed at the NCAA Regional Championships today, at Stanley Park in Westfield St. The Jumbos placed 5th with 114 points, the top seven runners all finishing in the top 45. Team scoring among the top 5 teams was extremely tight, with Tufts just 23 points out of first place.
Through the race, the Jumbos worked well together as all seven worked themselves to the front after a mix up at the starting line. Matt Rand ran 25:00 to earn All Region honors for the third time in his career, placing 6th with a performance not indicative of what he can achieve next week. Ben Wallis hung on to the front pack to finish 11th, impressively replicating his NESCAC placing with an additional 39 teams in the mix.
Tyler Andrews, Andrew Shapero, and Brian McLaughlin formed a solid 3-4-5, all placing between 28th and 35th to complete an All-Region scoring five. Kyle Marks and Jake McCauley battled through health issues this past week to finish inside the top 45.
While fifth place in the strong New England Region is a solid performance for Tufts, the Jumbos look have set their sights higher next week. Tufts awaits the at-large determinations tomorrow afternoon, where they will hear if they will be heading to Terre Haute as a team to compete at NCAAs.
