Jumbos Continue to Perform at Solomon Invite
(4/12/2008) Full ResultsFive Jumbos came away victorious from the Solomon Invite, hosted by Northeastern University, in addition to eight second place finishes, as Tufts posted very solid efforts across the board in the sprint, jumps, throws and distance events.
Tufts' effort was led by Trevor Donadt, who PRed to win the 400m intermediate hurdles in a time of 54.8 seconds. Donadt also was the top Tufts 110M high hurdler, running another PR of 15.13 to take second place, followed closely by Ikenna Acholonu in third with 15.26. Also posting a second place finish was sophomore Andrew Longley in the 400m hurdles in 56.15.
Phil Rotella also posted two top-2 finishes, coming away with the victory in the 200 meter dash with a PR time of 22.32, and finishing second in the 100m in 11.19. Also placing in the top 10 in the 100 were Colin Fitzgerald, Marc Soskin, Marcus Boggis, and Jon Pak, taking 7th through 10th places. Tufts will look for even better things from their short sprinters as the weather continues to improve.
On the distance side, sophomore Nick Welch posted a victory in the 3k steeplechase, running a solid PR of 9:41.57, followed by Ryan Lena in 3rd with 10:09.09. Both runners will be looking to post faster times as NESCACs approaches to support All-American Dave Sorensen in the steeple.
Sorensen decided to stay with a flat event this weekend, posting a 4:02.79 en route to a 2nd-place finish in the 1500 meter run. Jesse Faller finished right behind him in 4:04.73 for third. Also placing in the top 10 for the jumbos were senior Matt Alander and freshman Corey Melnick.
Moving to the mid-distance, sophomores Scott Brinkman and Billy Hale posted a 1-2 finish in the 800, running 1:57.04 and 1:57.28, respectively. Both qualified for ECACs as Brinkman continues his undefeated season with two victories in the 800 and one in the 400.
The top finisher for the Jumbos in the 400 was junior Marvin Walker, posting a college-best time of 51.65, good for third place. Walker has been PRing every week during this outdoor season, and better things are sure to come as the temperature on the track continues to rise and the races continue to speed up. Also in the top 10 was freshman Jeremy Peterson.
Senior Chris Kantos led the way for Tufts in the 5k, finishing 2nd in a team-best time of 15:23.17, qualifying him for the postseason in that event despite health struggles. Freshman Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot finished right behind Kantos in third, runnning 15:47.97 to qualify for NESCACs.
The field event ahtletes were again led by senior Dan Marcy, who posted a NCAA provisional mark of 14.08m en route to taking the victory. Also in the top 4 were senior Jake Fromer and Acholonu, taking 3rd and 4th.
Senior Jeremy Arak came away with 2nd place in the high jump, jumping a season-best 1.93. Also qualifying for NESCACs were Ted Mcmahon and Isaiah Paramore, each jumping 1.78m.
In the throws, senior Joe Brown led the way in each event, taking 3rd in the hammer, 8th in the discus, and 6th in the shot put. Freshmen David Dorman, Cullan Riley, and Alex Gresham also all posted solid marks, showing improvement from week to week.
The Jumbos travel to MIT next week in their last regular season meet before the NESCAC championships at Hamilton College.
