Jumbos Open Season With Trinity Invite
(9/12/2009) Full ResultsWickham Park, CT plays host to two of the Jumbos XC contests this fall. The first was this weekends Trinity Invitational, while the second won't be for another seven weeks when the Tufts XC team toes the line for the NESCAC Championships. Looking to give the majority of the team the opportunity to run on the conference championship course was the primary goal of this weekend's 5k at the Trinity Invite.
Heavy rains on Friday and Saturday left the predominantly grass course soft and slick. Temperatures at this weekend's race were ideal with a light mist continuing throughout the men's competition. Packed up early, the entire Jumbo squad took the first two plus miles of the course very conservatively with the front pack reaching the 2-mile mark in approximately 11:05.
From there, the pack split up into smaller groupings. Seniors Jesse Faller and Nick Welch finished the last 1950m of the 5150m course in 5:38 and 5:41 respectively. Fellow senior Ryan Lena stayed tight with junior Jeff Ragazzini and first-year Matt Rand. Rounding out the top seven for the Jumbos were two other members of the class of 2013 in the forms of Sam Haney and Kyle Marks.
Resting this weekend for the squad were juniors Chris Brunnquell and Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot who were each members of the top 7 for the Jumbos last year. With so few members lost to graduation last spring and a deep group of incoming freshmen, this fall's XC squad looks to really push one another to find new heights.
Next weekend the squad is off from competition, but will head back to Connecticut for the Conn College Invitational in two weeks at Harkness Memorial Park. It will be the first 8k of the season for the Jumbos.
